The IOC told the Voice of America via email that, China has granted foreign athletes and accredited foreign media participating in the Beijing Winter Olympics access to “open internet services” at the athletes’ village, competition-related venues, and contracted media hotels. You can connect and use networks and social platforms (Google, Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Signal, etc.) in China that are blocked by the Great Firewall of the Internet.
The IOC said certified participants will be able to use their own devices to access publicly available network services through wired or wireless optical transport network (OTN) connections, after purchasing phone cards (SIM) specific to Beijing Winter Olympics users.
Usually a VPN(Virtual Private Network) is required to access international Internet services in China. About 90% of VPNs are not available in China due to the constant upgrade of the Great Firewall.
