Testing StrongVPN Usability on MacBook in China – Jan 4 2025

Today, I will be testing StrongVPN on a MacBook in mainland China. I previously tested the Windows version. StrongVPN offers two versions that can be used in China: one is the International version, and the other is called the StrongVPN Client version. Today, I will be testing the International version and will explain the necessary setup steps for using it in China.

Setting for China

Open the StrongVPN settings, uncheck “Optimize The VPN For China” under “General,” then check “OpenVPN” under “Advanced.” You can try the UDP protocol, and TCP is also an option. The port can be freely set; it’s recommended to start with the default value and experiment with different combinations. Also, make sure to check “Scramble.”

Today, before starting the test, I connected to StrongVPN earlier this morning, and so far, I’ve been using it for 4 hours and 50 minutes. During this time, there have been no disconnections, YouTube streaming was smooth with no buffering, and using X (Twitter) was also very seamless. In this test, I plan to try more servers and test other websites such as BBC iPlayer, ChatGPT, Claude AI, Gemini, and more.

I will conduct quick tests on the remaining servers, aiming to test as many as possible within a limited time. Screenshots will no longer be shared; only the results will be published. The primary test will focus on whether the connection successfully enables internet access by checking YouTube. Any special cases will be noted separately.

Summary: Based on the above test results, StrongVPN is currently performing quite well. If this is your first time reading a VPN test report for China, you might find it strange to test whether connecting to a server is successful. However, it’s important to understand that in China, this is crucial. It is the most significant indicator of a VPN’s usability—arguably even more critical than speed.

If you are planning to travel or work in China, you can use this test report as a reference for connecting. While I cannot guarantee a 100% success rate for every server you try, following my recent reports will undoubtedly be helpful.

This VPN offers relatively simple features without extras like ad-blocking or split tunneling. However, it can unlock most websites, including AI platforms and streaming services, making it a practical choice.

Additionally, make sure to install and log in to your VPN account before entering China. Performing these actions within China can be challenging.
