How to Use Spotify to Listen to Music and Podcasts in China

When you travel to or work in China, you’ll probably want to enjoy great music or engaging podcasts during your trip. That’s why I hope you read this article before arriving in China. In mainland China, you won’t be able to connect to Spotify servers using your computer, phone, or iPad. The only solution to use Spotify in China is by using a VPN.

When choosing a VPN, there are two key points to keep in mind. First and foremost, make sure the VPN you choose actually works in China. Due to the internet restrictions in China, 99% of VPNs won’t connect. Currently, only a few VPNs have specific servers that work in China. You can check my detailed test report, “VPN TEST IN CHINA,” to find out which ones are effective.

Secondly, Spotify employs security measures to prevent DDoS attacks and bot access. If the IP address of the VPN server you’re using is flagged as a VPN, Spotify will also block access.

From my testing with the web version, Android, and iPhone, I found that some U.S. servers of StrongVPN and PureVPN can unblock Spotify in China. Between the two, I recommend StrongVPN because its server connection is more stable than PureVPN’s.

If you’re an Apple Music user, that’s fantastic! In China, Apple Music works directly without needing a VPN. Even if you’re using an account from a non-China region (such as the U.S., UK, or Japan), it will function without any issues. Similarly, Apple Podcasts can also be accessed in China without a VPN.

Why are Apple Music and Podcasts available in China? This is likely because Apple has separated the mainland China version from the international version. However, keep in mind that the content available in the mainland China version is much more limited compared to the international one.

If you want to use services like Apple TV, Netflix, Disney+, HBO GO & MAX, Prime Video, Paramount+, Hulu, Peacock, Crunchyroll, or YouTube in China, unfortunately, none of these platforms can be accessed directly. To use them, you’ll need a VPN. StrongVPN and PureVPN are good options to consider.

It’s important to note that my recommendation of StrongVPN and PureVPN being usable is based on recent tests, which only reflect their availability in the short term (a few months to a year). Beyond this time frame, their reliability cannot be guaranteed. The usability of any VPN in China is always dynamic. Make sure to refer to the latest test results on this site. If you’re reading a report from a year ago, it may no longer be relevant or reliable.
