On January 19, 2025, TikTok’s removal from the Apple Store and Google Play in the U.S. seems inevitable. So, if you are a U.S.-based user who needs to download TikTok for any reason, how can you do so?
The method depends on whether you use an Apple iOS or Android device. The following options can help U.S. users download and install TikTok, but be sure to check whether your state allows such downloads before proceeding.
How Android Users Can Download TikTok
For Android users, there are two main options. Normally, TikTok would be available via Google Play, but since your Google Play account is linked to the U.S. region, you won’t find TikTok there.
Switch Google Play Region
Instead of changing the region of your current account, it’s recommended to register a new Google Play account linked to a region where TikTok is still available, such as Canada, Mexico, the UK, Japan, or France. Google’s policy allows you to change your Google Play country only once a year, and after the first change, you’ll need to wait 12 months to switch again.
Steps to Switch Google Play Region
- Open Google Play Store: On your Android device, launch the Google Play Store app.
- Go to Profile: Tap the profile icon in the top-right corner.
- Settings: Navigate to Settings > General > Account and Device Preferences > Country and Profiles.
- Add a New Country: Select the desired country and follow the prompts to add a new payment method.
Important Notes
- You can only change your country setting once per year.
- Changing the region may restrict access to certain apps or content.
Download APK Files
Android devices support third-party installation files, so you can visit TikTok’s official website or a trusted APK source to download the .apk file and install it manually. For updates, simply download the latest version and reinstall.
How iOS Users Can Download TikTok
Apple devices do not allow third-party installation files (unless you’re a developer), so the alternative is to adjust your Apple ID settings:
Switch Apple ID Region
You can either switch the region of your current Apple ID or create a new Apple ID for a country where TikTok is still available.
After logging in with the new ID, open the App Store to download TikTok.
Steps to Switch Apple Store Region
- Open Settings: On your iPhone or iPad, go to the Settings app.
- Tap Your Name: Access your Apple ID settings at the top of the screen.
- Media & Purchases: Select Media & Purchases.
- View Account: Tap View Account and authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID if required.
- Change Country or Region: Choose Country/Region, then tap Change Country or Region.
- Select New Country: Pick a country from the list and update your payment and billing information.
Important Notes
Apps downloaded with a new Apple ID can only be updated using that same ID. Keep the credentials safe for future use. If you’re a content creator, consider using a secondary device for these actions. Avoid uninstalling TikTok on your primary device, as reinstallation may become impossible once it’s removed from the store.
